Paola | The Neon District, Norfolk VA

Saturday, January 20, 2018

I've been craving warmth lately. It could have something to do with frigid Winter temperatures or the cold cement slab beneath my flooring, but either way, I needed this day. The temperature was in the high 50s and I couldn't get enough of the sun and the warmth it provided. My three babies and I spent nearly all day outside, and part of the day we spent with one sweet lady, Paola, who I've been trying to get with for what seems like months now. Paola and I talked about wanting to do something creative with sunlight. I usually shy away from midday portrait sessions because of the harsh lighting, but lately I have seen reason to embrace it. I want to learn to play with the shadows instead of run from them. I want to learn to use the sunlight during any given moment of the day and to find the best possible solutions for that harsh light photographers generally run from. Golden hour is still my most favorite time to shoot soft, romantic looking portraits, but midday can lend itself to moody, contrasty portraits as well. So Paola and I headed down to Norfolk in The Neon District to have some fun. The Neon District is loaded with art displayed all over the buildings and alley ways filled with interesting murals. The architecture is interesting and provides a dated, yet modern geometric feel. Paola was comfortable in front of the camera and made the hour pass by with laughter and ease.

I'd love to hear your comments on the session. Leave a comment below to let me know which photo is your favorite. 💛
